You should never hesitate to call 911 when you are faced with a medical emergency, but how do you know you are dealing with an emergency? It is usually fairly obvious when someone is having a life-threatening problem, but it can be hard to read the signs if you are unfamiliar with them. Emergencies include:
Sudden feelings of dizziness or disorientation
Sudden fatigue or pain in the limbs
Large, serious and/or facial burns
Chest pain that lasts longer than a couple hours
Thoughts of suicide
Coughing or vomiting blood
Severe or persistent vomiting
Severe or traumatic broken bones
If you are unsure you are dealing with a medical emergency, call 911 and tell them what is going on as calmly as you can. Keep in mind that the emergency room should only be sought in actual emergencies. If you are seeking treatment for a severe cold or fever because your doctor’s office is closed, you will be better served at an urgent care clinic.
